History is a matter of design, and design is a matter of history.

In my research and teaching I explore core ideas and methods in design, aiming to highlight how the past shapes what we think and do in the present, and how that conditions the futures possible to move towards. Through critically engaging with the historical ideas and values embedded in contemporary design practices, we might find ways of designing that can redirect our trajectories towards more just and sustainable futures.

My work combines approaches from conceptual and intellectual history with practice-oriented and artistic design research. I have an educational background in the history of science and ideas as well as studies in semiotics and aesthetics at the University of Bologna. 

I am associate professor in design history and design theory at the Umeå Institute of Design (UID), Umeå University, Sweden.

Transitional design histories do not provide explanations of what design is or has been. Shifting the outlook of design history from product to process – from things to thinking – the ambition is to make histories that speak to matters of concern in contemporary design, and to activate an awareness of design's historicity in designing.

Transitional design histories are histories for design, rather than of design. These aim to make conceptual moves that support developing design practices capable of engaging with a complex ‘now’ and with uncertain futures.
